This is the moment a large road sign fell onto an oncoming car travelling along a motorway in Thailand.

The 7ft-tall pole bearing various safety rules and reminders was already tilted as Namwhan Chanchira's vehicle approached the capital Bangkok on October 7.

However, just as he drove past the object, it suddenly collapsed and hit his windshield.

Shocking dash cam footage shows the sign crashing onto the windshield by the driver's seat.

Shaken Namwhan said: ‘I was heading to a restaurant to eat. I saw the road sign prohibiting the passing of motorcycles.

‘It happened so fast. I heard the loud sound and I was so frightened. I have not processed what happened in my head until I re-watched the dash cam video.'

The startled driver continued driving along the road while calming himself down.

Namwhan added he had informed the road traffic agencies about the incident and wanted them to pay for the damages.

He said: ‘My insurance company covered the scratches but since the traumatising incident I have been suffering from mental health problems.

‘I know it may not be big deal to them but it is for me. The only answer I had was that they would pay but only some of the amount requested.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
