A quick-thinking boy was rescued from a 6ft-deep well after he called his grandmother for help using his mobile phone.

Nong Tawan, 9, was on his way to visit relatives when he walked through an abandoned strawberry farm in Nakhon Nayok province, Thailand on December 7.

However, he stepped into a hole - plunging down the shaft and trapping him in the narrow, 6-foot-deep pit.

Luckily, he was carrying a smartphoe that still had reception, allowing him to dial his grandmother. The frantic pensioner then asked her neighbour Thawee Sarika, 72, to search for the youngster.

When he arrived at the scene, Thawee managed to find the boy by following his voice. He kept him company while waiting for the rescue team to arrive as night was fast approaching.

Emergency services rushed to the farm and prepared to evacuate Tawan from the well. They threw a bottle of water down the hole as he had been stuck inside over an hour.

Since the well was too narrow to fit two people, officers instead lowered a plastic chair tied to a rope and used it as a makeshift pulley to pull Tawan out. The brave boy didn't cry but appeared exhausted after the ordeal.

Tawan said: 'I was lucky to be carrying a mobile phone I could use to call for help. There was no one in the strawberry farm and the area was quiet and dark.'

He added that the hole was not clearly visible since it was covered by a broken manhole cover and thick grass.

A rescuer said: 'Luckily, there was no water in the drain, otherwise the boy would have been in a worse condition. He appeared to be exhausted when we brought him up as he was trapped under for almost an hour.

'We struggled to pull him up because the hole was narrow. He is now resting with his family.'
