SA’s ruling party divided over Cyril Ramaphosa
ANC (African National Congress) members are divided over the allegations surrounding President Cyril Ramaphosa. Parliament yesterday voted on whether to adopt a report and impeach the president. The report emanates into allegations that the president failed to report a burglary at his private game farm where allegedly hundreds of thousands of dollars was stolen from out of a couch at his Phala Phala game farm in the province of Limpopo.
Ahead of the parliamentary debate opposing groups protested on the outskirts of the CBD. The ANC Women’s League picketed in favour of Ramaphosa and pledged to support him to secure a second term as president of the party. The party is due to hold its national elective conference this weekend to elect a new leadership term for the next 5 years. Constance Croats, a long standing ANC member and a parliamentary employee said Ramaphosa has made strides against those involved in state capture and corruption.
An opposing group calling for Ramaphosa to be impeached was pushed back by riot police from the precinct around the parliamentary sitting. The group was led by Carl Niehaus who is spokesperson for the MK Military Veteran’s association. Niehaus has recently been stripped of his party membership for bringing the ANC into disrepute. Niehaus has been a fierce critic of Ramaphosa and has been an outspoken supporter of former president Jacob Zuma and his ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who challenged Ramaphosa for the party leadership in 2017.
