A farmer in Wayanad in India's Kerala state has used different varieties of rice to create a field depicting a vast image of Jesus Christ, when viewed from the air.

The rice paddy art appeared in glorious detail ahead of Christmas Day.

Farmer Praseedkumar Thayyil made the news with his creation, which is not his first.

His farm has been a huge canvas for various examples of paddy art, which involves planting different coloured varieties of rice in intricate designs.

Tourists are making a beeline for his farm to view the image of Christ, which is 30 x 40m in size.

Six varieties of rice -- Ramlee, Dabarshala, Nazar Bath, Rakthasali, Krishnakaumod and Kalyani violet varieties -- were used to create the image, which cost the young farmer 15,000 rupees (181 dollars) to complete.

Following his example, some other farmers in the district are also creating images in their rice fields.
