Zookeepers are taking precautions to keep their animals warm as temperatures continue to plunge during the cool winter snap in Thailand.

Staff began 'winter-proofing' the animals' enclosures in Nakhon Ratchasima province after the mercury dropped to just 10 degrees Celsius on December 15

The roofs of the bird cages have been opened up to allow more sunlight to stream in, while windproof shelters were also placed inside.

Employees have also started handing out jute sacks for chimpanzees and lemurs to use as makeshift jackets for the chilly weather.

Heat lamps and stacks of hay were scattered around the reptile cages for the cold-blooded creatures to crawl into for warmth.

The Thai Meteorological Department has advised residents to bundle up in warmer clothing as a cold front from China will prevail over Thailand's northern regions starting December 13. The cold front is expected to cause temperature drops of 3 to 6 degrees Celsius.
