Train tracks damaged from flash floods as storms kill three in southern Thailand
Railway services have been suspended after severe floods damaged train tracks during storms that killed at least three people in southern Thailand.
Several train trips were cancelled while authorities are conducting repairs on the line from the Khao Chaison station to the Bang Kaeo station in Phatthalung province on December 20.
Days of heavy rain have caused mountain runoff to rush into the Songkhla Lake, flooding nearby districts and damaging railway infrastructure.
Train officials said the deluge destroyed a 300-metre stretch on the tracks. Repairs are ongoing and are expected to be finished by December 23, but have been delayed due to strong currents and continuous flooding.
In the neighbouring province of Narathiwat, three people were killed when their vehicle was submerged in the torrents of muddy flash floods. They were a grandmother, 68, a mother, 38, and a son, 12, while the father, 40, and another son, 14, were taken to hospital where they regained consciousness.
Thailand's Meteorological Department had earlier warned of 'four metre high waves' battering regions along the country's eastern-facing coastline. Several ships were sunken, including the navy warship HTMS Sukothai.
Officials said the storms and heavy rain would continue until December 20 in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat along the border with Malaysia. There were also severe floods across the provinces.
