A stealthy jaguar showed incredible acceleration before diving on a caiman from a riverbed.

Henrique Olsen was filmed in the Pantanal region of Brazil when he came across a big cat – known locally as Ague – stalking the sands of the river.

Exciting footage shows the jaguar suddenly pick up speed as she sprinted across the beach in seconds before leaping into the water at her prey.

Despite her speed, Ague was unsuccessful in her hunt and swam off without the caiman in her jaws.

Henrique, who runs Jaguar Safaris, said: “I've been following the jaguars closely for two years and their behaviour is still incredible to observe and photograph.

“Every time I'm photographing or filming one, I'm excited. The preservation of this beautiful species protects our forests in the Pantanal and Amazon.

“We watched Ague for around 30 minutes, until she decided to strike. She was only 25 metres from our boat when she jumped in.

“I’ve worked as a photographer in different locations around the world for different companies, brands and NGOs.

“In 2020, the Brazilian Pantanal experienced the greatest tragedy in its history, with a record of drought and forest fires.

“This moved me to focus all my efforts and direct my photography projects to this unique and threatened biome, which is habitat of the greatest jaguar population on planet.”
