This is the dramatic moment a baby boy was rescued from neck-deep flash floods in Indonesia.

Footage shows the child being carried in a basin by villagers wading through the muddy waters that surged into the Sumedang Regency of West Java province on December 21 evening.

Locals shielded the baby from the rain with umbrellas before handing it over to rescuers on higher ground.

Asep Ramdani, head of the Sumedang disaster agency's emergency and logistics section, said evacuations were carried out amid panic in the region as the water level continued to rise.

He said: 'The flood hit several villages. Thank God the mother and baby survived after being evacuated by the village head and residents.'

The deluge is said to have been after the nearby Cipelang River burst its banks and inundated the settlements.

Local media reported that one person had died in the flood.

Asep said: 'The victim was an adult male, dragged away by the flood currents. We found him 200 metres from the initial location of the report we received. He was already dead when we found him.'

The man's body has been taken to a funeral home.
