Driver of U-Haul Truck Involved in Burglaries Leads Police on High Speed Chase
HEMET - On 12/26/2022 at approximately 10:30 pm, Hemet police officers spotted a suspicious U-Haul truck parked near a Wells Fargo bank near Stetson and State St and attempted to make contact.
The driver noticed the approaching officers and sped off. Hemet PD initiated a pursuit that went northbound on State St into the city of San Jacinto at high speeds. Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies jumped into the pursuit with a helicopter overhead once the suspect drove into San Jacinto city limits.
Shortly upon entering San Jacinto, the driver turned around and proceeded to head back into Hemet driving recklessly with a large amount of police and deputies in chase.
When the U-Haul arrived near the area of the intersections of San Jacinto St and Florida Ave, multiple subjects opened the rear door of the truck, jumped out and scattered.
The pursuit ended with the U-Haul stopped in a parking lot near the intersection of San Jacinto St and Florida Ave and with one subject being aprehended nearby after attempting to flee.
It's unknown if this subject was the driver or one of the individuals who ran from the back of the U-Haul. It's unknown at this time if any of the other suspects have been caught or if police have any leads on their identities.
The motive behing the chase is unknown at this time. A motorcylcle, tools and other items were recovered from the truck and animal control showed up to remove a dog in the cabin of the vehicle. It's possible the suspects may have been involved in burglaries although nothing official has been released to confirm this at this time.
