Palestinians clash with Israeli forces while demanding release of bodies of militants
Palestinian protesters clashed with Israeli forces during a march to demand the release of slain Palestinian militants' corpses in Israeli custody.
Hundreds of demonstrators carrying flags, photos, and banners of the deceased held a 'March of Immortality' from Al-Bireh city to the Qalandia checkpoint in the West Bank on December 27.
They called for the release of the bodies of Palestinian prisoners, including cancer-stricken inmate Nasser Abu Hamid who died in jail last week.
Fights erupted as Israeli soldiers cracked down on the protest with cans of tear gas, with Palestinian media reporting 11 demonstrators injured in the skirmish.
Israeli authorities announced in 2020 that they will be witholding the corpses of Palestinians killed in anti-Israel attacks in a bid to deter further violence. The policy has been slammed as 'barbaric' by human rights groups.
