Five injured from when truck ignores level-crossing barrier and oncoming train hits vehicle
An impatient pickup truck driver caused an accident injuring five people after ignoring a level crossing - and being hit by an oncoming train.
Motorist Sittipong Paitoon, 18, told police he drove around the edge of the barrier because he through the tracks were clear in Chonburi, eastern Thailand, on December 27.
However, CCTV shows how a passenger train traveling from the capital Bangkok smashed into the white Isuzu - pushing it into a waiting car and two motorcycles.
Sittipong and three other road users were injured. The train driver also suffered cuts to his face from the glass that smashed.
Police arrested Sittipong and he reportedly confessed to driving over the railway tracks while the level crossing barrier was down because 'he didn't think there was a train coming'.
Residents living near the accident are now demanding government officials improve the safety by making the barrier longer to prevent drivers from skirting around the edges.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Nithis Thongdee said: 'We have questioned Mr Sittipong Paitoon, the driver who caused the accident. He said that he had driven while the barrier was down, because in his mind, he thought that the train had not arrived yet, so drove through the barrier. The train crashed into his car and he hit the stationary car and two motorcycles.
'Initially, we have detained Mr. Sittiphong and we are waiting for the outcome of the investigation in order to be able to prosecute him.'
