A series of forest fires has burned over 5,000 hectares in Biobío Region, central Chile on December 30th.

Footage from the towns of Laja and San Rosendo shows the fire sending enormous clouds of smoke from the forests as it spreads towards populated areas.

Being fanned by strong winds, the fire spread quickly and prompted an evacuation in multiple communes. According to reports, at least 20 houses and a school have been destroyed across the region.
