One person died while another was injured after they were hit by an oncoming train at a level crossing in Thailand.

The driver Prayad Paochit, 77, was in his pickup truck when he ignored warning lights to drive through the barriers between Ban Kang and Sa Kaen stations in Sa Kaeo province on January 4.

The oncoming train ploughed into the car and pushed it for 100 metres before it stopped.

Prayad was injured and was taken to Sa Kaeo Crown Prince Hospital while the passenger Som Panthong died.

Meanwhile, the train was damaged but passengers and the barrier were not harmed in the incident.

Officials said the train came from Bangkok and travelled to the Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo with some delay from the schedule.

They said that CCTV showed the driver was at fault for ignoring the lowered barriers, warning lights and sirens in an apparent attempt to outrun the approaching train.
