Video captured in close-up the moment Mount Marapi erupted on Saturday 7 January.

The volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia, ejected clouds of smoke and ash on Saturday morning, local time.

The volcano monitoring agency said there were nine eruptions in total, with the resulting column of ash reaching 300 meters into the sky.

These are the seconds when Mount Marapi erupted, in the Tanah Datar district and Agam district of West Sumatra.

Volcanic ash bursts are clearly visible on video, which is from the monitoring camera of the Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (abbreviated as PVMBG in Indonesian). Their office covering Mount Marapi is in nearby Bukittinggi City.

The first eruption occurred at 6:11am local time. The thick grey ash was ejected towards the south east and was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 13.4mm.

Later there was another eruption, that lasted 45 seconds and reached a height of 200m from the peak of Kawa.

Mount Marapi is located in Tanah Datar and Agam districts of West Sumatra, at an altitude of 2,891m above sea level.

Currently, the volcano is on Alert Level 2 and the public are prohibited from getting within 3km of the mountain.
