Extreme sports Indonesia-style: Men dragged through mud for bull races marking new year and the end of harvest season
The extreme sport of bull racing or 'Pacu Jawi' is back in Indonesia.
Footage shows locals in West Sumatra province marking the New Year holidays by taking part in a traditional bull racing event on Saturday January 7.
Jockeys were dragged through muddy rice paddies at high speed by their bulls in this exhilarating sporting event in Tanah Datar Regency.
Although described as a race, the bulls do not directly compete against each other and no formal winner is announced.
The tradition, which has been around for hundreds of years, sometimes takes place to celebrate the end of the rice harvest season.
More recently it has become an attraction that draws tourists and is a popular subject for global photographers to take pictures of.
