Video captured the moment a volcano in Indonesia began to erupt behind climbers filming themselves on the summit on Saturday 7 January.

The group had just climbed Mount Marapi, a volcano in West Sumatra.

The footage was filmed by Karel Rizki, a climber from Duri City.

As they stood there, steam coming from the nearby crater turned into black smoke and ash, forcing them to flee.

"I was recording a selfie video greeting friends in the village, showing off that I had reached the top. There was a sound of an explosion and then thick smoke came out," Rizki said.

Mount Marapi, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, erupted several times on Saturday, sending a 300m column of ash into the sky.

The Marapi volcano monitoring officer said the first eruption occurred at 6:11am local time.

It is the first time in five years it has erupted, the officer said.

It has erupted more than 30 times between its first ejection and Sunday night.
