A pair of cheeky horses escaped from a beach race and took off on a highway in Australia.

The two equines threw off their riders and galloped onto the asphalt next to Surfers Paradise beach while participating in a promotional race for the Magic Millions event in Queensland on January 10.

Footage shows the animals cantering across the sand onto the asphalt, shocking onlookers and beachside residents.

The runaway horses ran around 10 miles along the Gold Coast Highway before they were finally captured.

They did not cause any injuries or traffic disruptions, local media reported.

Magic Millions said in a statement: 'Two horses left the Surfers Paradise beach enclosure today after the beach run. Horses were returned almost immediately safe and unharmed. All horses have been vet checked and the jockeys involved were unharmed, but checked as a precaution.'

Acting Gold Coast Mayor Donna Gates said a horse had also been rescued after escaping from a Magic Millions event and swimming in a canal on Saturday.
