An 8-year-old boy born with only one arm cooked for his family members who tested positive for COVID-19 in China.

Video filmed by the boy's mother in Haian City in Jiangsu Province on December 21, 2022, shows a one-armed boy preparing meals in a kitchen while his mother Cai Xiumei accompanied him.

According to Cai, his son Ben Yuechen, nicknamed Youyou was the only one who did not have serious symptoms in their family, So he took the responsibility to take care of everyone for several days.

Ben’s parents and his elder brother were infected with COVID-19 in rapid succession and they were quarantined in one room to prevent affecting Ben's weak grandmother with seriously ill.

Cai said she heard some noise and thought it was Ben's grandmother cooking in the kitchen. She did not realise it was Ben until she saw the CCTV camera.

Cai said it was the first time Ben had to cook on his own.

His mother, Mrs. Cai, rushed to the kitchen and stood beside him to accompany and record this touching episode.

As Mrs. Cai recalled, only Ben Yuechen, the boy, whose nickname is Youyou, had no obvious symptoms. He endeavoured to take care of his family for days.

Yuechen’s parents and his elder brother were infected in rapid succession. Their three stayed in a room to prevent affecting the weak grandmother on the seriously ill.

In Mrs. Cai’s memory, she heard some noise coming from the kitchen when she was delirious and she guessed it was the grandmother that was cooking. She did not realize the fact until she saw the CCTV camera.

She said Yuechen have never cooked on his own without a guardian, except for this time.

After publishing this video on the internet, Ben was interviewed about why he did that. Ben responded that he should take over the duties especially when his parents were seriously ill.

Ben was born with one arm, which did not show up in prenatal testing, according to Cai.
