A Chinese woman and her daughter were killed after being hit by an oncoming train at a level crossing in Thailand.

Lin Yiman, 39, was taking the usual route home in her pickup truck through the crossing in Samut Sakhon province on January 6 when the vehicle's wheels became stuck on the tracks.

Lin battled to drive it off the railway before rushing to carry her one-year-old daughter Kanoklak Sae-ju from the back seat to safety.

The frantic mum cradled her child as she left the pickup still straddling the tracks, but both of them were struck by the rumbling train.

Responders rushed them to the Samut Sakhon Hospital, but they succumbed to their severe injuries.

The train operator said he blew the train's whistle and pulled the brakes to warn Lin, but could not prevent the collision. There were also warning lights, but no barriers at the crossing.

A nearby street vendor said that Lin often drove through the crossing as it was her usual route.

A funeral was held for Lin and her daughter from January 7 to 9 at the Wat Sri Buranawasa temple.

Following the tragedy, Samut Sakhon governor Narong Rakroi vowed to enforce safety improvements at crossings, including more visible warnings and more roads to prevent motorists from taking shortcuts across the tracks.
