An Indonesian policeman filmed the moment Mount Marapi erupted while they were looking for missing people in the rice fields not far from the mountain on Wednesday (January 11).

Footage filmed in Sungai Tarab Hamlet, Tanah Datar District, West Sumatra Province, Wednesday morning, shows a policeman pointing towards the top of Mount Marapi which spews black smoke into the sky.

It can be heard in the video, a member of the Tarab River sector police, Chief Brigadier Rahmad Joliardi, who filmed the moment, said, “The eruption of Mount Marapi when searching for missing people. Just happened".

"When we were looking for the missing man, we went through the rice fields. It was then that the view of the eruption of Mount Merapi. Masyaallah," Bripka Joliardi added.

According to him, the eruption he filmed was the highest compared to the eruption since Mount Marapi erupted in the last four days.

The Marapi Volcano Observation Post, Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bukittinggi noted that a mountain with a height of 2,981 meters above sea level (MASL) had erupted since Saturday, January 7.

As of Wednesday afternoon there had been 134 eruptions, with details of 15 eruptions on Saturday, 27 on Sunday, 35 on Monday, 34 on Tuesday and another 23 on Wednesday (until 18.00).

The height of the volcanic ash eruption was from 200 metres to the highest on Wednesday morning, as high as 800 metres.

The eruption on Wednesday resulted in a thin ash shower in the Northeast.
