Residents have been warned to take health precautions after Mount Kerinci spewed out a 900-metre ash column in Indonesia on Wednesday (January 11).

Footage shows the thick smoke column coming out of the volcano's crater in West Sumatra.

Irwan Syafwan, officer at the Kerinci Volcano Observation Post, said: Looking at the direction of the volcanic ash column, it tends to move toward the northeast and east".

Locals were urged to wear masks to avoid inhaling the ash particles.

A danger level of II or "careful" has been raised over the volcano.

The eruption comes as another Mount Marapi - also in West Sumatra - began churning out smoke on January 7.

Mount Marapi has been active since December 25, and began belching ash up to 300 metres above its peak at 6.11 am local time.

A danger level of II or "careful" has been raised over the volcano, with authorities warning residents and tourists not to enter a three-kilometre radius within.

It is currently at danger level II.
