Tourists come across strange speed bump...a 15-foot-long Burmese python crossing road
A group of tourists came across a "gigantic" Burmese python lying across a road.
The enormous snake said to be 15-foot long (4.6 metres), is seen taking up both lanes of the highway.
Kymberly Clark filmed the scary moment as she and her friends approaches the python and the camerawoman jokes to her friend, Tippy: “Pick it up.”
As the huge snake slithers off the road and away from the tourists, a female voice says in the background: “That is the biggest snake I’ve ever seen in my whole life.”
Kymberly spotted it after visiting the Everglades National Park in Florida, US, with some fellow wildlife photographers.
She said she pinned their location and reported the snake sighting to the authorities.
Kymberly said: “We were mostly looking for birds of prey and exotic birds.
“We were also scanning the fields for other wildlife. We never expected to see a gigantic python on the road.
“I stopped as quickly as I could, taking safety into consideration.
“As you can tell from the recording after I passed the python.
“Siri was asking me to proceed to the route when I jumped out of the car to get a better look.
“We are not snake experts, but we knew it was extremely large when we passed it.
“As we got closer, we realised it was a python, but we were not entirely sure until we Googled a photo of it.”
She added: “My friends and I were, of course, surprised and shocked.”
Kymberly said: “We approached it with extreme caution. My friends, Tippy and Lu, grabbed their cameras to ID it.
“I reached for my iPhone instead.
“I jokingly ask my friend Tippy to pick it up as a couple of weeks ago he was bitten by a snake we encountered.
“Once the snake took off into the swampy marsh, we identified it and my friend Lu measured it using an iPhone app. It estimated the python to be about 15.2 feet long.
“I have never seen a snake this large before in the wild, especially a python.”
As Burmese pythons are considered an invasive species in Florida, Kymberly said she received criticism online for not running the reptile over in her car.
She told Jam Press: “I was quite surprised to see the social media reaction after posting the video on my Instagram. I have received so many hateful comments, people placing blame on me for not running it over.
“People should not release exotic pets into the wild. I could not kill this snake humanely, which is a legal requirement. A gun is necessary, we are photographers.
“Even the most qualified snake hunters could not easily capture and humanely kill this python.
“My friends and I did what we could. We documented the sighting, reported it, and pinned the location.”
In Florida, Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in the wild after being brought in as pets.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the species is mainly found around the Everglades in southern Florida, and that they represent a threat to native wildlife.
Florida hosts a competition to eliminate Burmese pythons every year.
In 2022, over 230 Burmese pythons were reportedly removed from the Everglades.
