A woman discovered a fish without a mouth in eastern China.

Video filmed in the city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province on January 1 shows a woman named Zhao holding a bighead carp to the camera as its mouth could not open.

Zhao, who is a fishmonger said she has been in the business for 10 years but it was the first time seeing a fish without a mouth that could open.

Zhao said she was not sure how the fish could eat.

According to reports, bighead carps are filter feeders. They live by filtering phytoplankton out of the water and their mouths are not used to eat, so they can live without mouths.

据了解，花鲢是滤食性鱼类，它们主要依靠过滤水中的浮游动植物生存，嘴巴并不是用来吃东西的，这也意味着，这条花鲢是可以在“闭嘴”的环境下成长的。对于滤食型鱼类来说，鱼嘴的主要作用在于引水，它和鳃盖的交替开闭，可以使水不断地由口进入口腔。而“无嘴鱼”无法开口，确实会多少影响呼吸，但可以通过鱼鳃代偿。对于“无嘴鱼”来说，其鳃的作用远大于嘴，呼吸，进食，排泄，都可以由鳃来完成。
