A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook homes in Indonesia today (January 16).

Footage shows the quake shaking a chandelier and photos hanging on a wall in Aceh province, northern Sumatra.

The United States Geological Survey reported that it was centred around 48 kilometres southeast of Singkil city at a depth of 37 kilometres. It struck at 22:29 UTC.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or serious damage.

No tsunami alerts have been raised.

Indonesia sits inside the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
