Smartphone explodes when owner tries to repair it
This is the unfortunate moment an Indonesian woman tries to fix her sluggish smartphone with a pin, but when the phone is disassembled while it's on, it shorts in her hand and then explodes.
CCTV footage shows Muspita Sari, age 21, opening her phone body at Soto stall where she works in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra Province on January 13.
Sari said she was trying to fix the slow Xiaomi Redmi 4A smartphone.
"Usually my phone will run normally after removing the battery, then plugging it in and turning it on again," Sari said.
She is seen taking a pin in the hijab that is attached on her head to pry the phone body.
After a while the phone started emitting smoke. Sari moved away from the cellphone that was now emitting fire.
"I pry it with a needle to open it, but when part of the casing is open, I stick the needle in and it immediately starts to smoke," Sari added.
Seeing her phone explode and burn, Sari was scared and gave up hope, but she remembered to save the SIM card quickly.
She dropped her phone on the floor, then in a panic she grabbed a chili mill to put out the heat so she could remove the SIM card.
"The SIM card was saved, but my phone was burnt and could no longer be used," Sari said.
Two days after the incident, the stall owner gave Sari a new smartphone costing 2 million rupiah ($135). "But it must be replaced with several months' installments," Sari said.
