This is the terrifying moment a powerful dust devil formed next to cars and destroyed at least 10 homes in Indonesia.

Dramatic footage shows the twister intensifying beside a rural road near a construction area, vacuuming up leaves and dust as it gained strength in Sumedang Regency, West Java, on January 13.

Residents said the vortex lasted for around five minutes before fading.

Agus Sujatmiko, head of the Paseh District, said: 'Based on reports and temporary data, there were 10 houses damaged in two villages.'

He added there were no casualties reported despite the size of the tornado.

Dust devils are a type of whirlwind tornado that form when the sun heats a patch of land and the air above becomes warmer and rises quickly.

Cooler air then moves into the low-pressure gap left by the rising warm air. The new drafts of cooler air also heat up, rise and the cycle continues, picking up dust and debris and making the spiral visible.
