An injured stray dog hit by a car and left to die on a dirty pond was rescued in Thailand.

The mother pooch was reportedly with her puppy when a still unidentified driver struck them in Phitsanulok province.

She was thrown off into the ditch and stayed partially submerged in the mossy puddle for three days until animal rescuers received a report and went to save her.

Footage shows the volunteers pulling the weary dog under the thick lilies in the water on January 9.

Rescuer Kessaraporn Boonk said: ‘I felt so sorry for the dog. She didn't deserve that. I hope people would learn to be more compassionate to stray animals.'

The rescue team found the baby dog nearby, unable to help its mum.

Meanwhile, the rescuers took the injured mother dog to a veterinary clinic where doctors would treat its injuries.

Kessaraporn said: ‘She was badly injured. Her legs were broken, possibly from being hit by the car.

‘Being stuck in the ditch for days also further damaged her nerves. We will do our best to help her.'
