Indian Army officers rescued a group of 172 construction workers who were left stranded by an avalanche in Ganderbal, Jammu and Kashmir.

Footage shared by the Indian Army shows soldiers escorting the workers through the snow on January 14.

Workers from the Megha Engineering and Industry Limited were working on the construction of the Zojila tunnel when the avalanche occurred.

All 172 were successfully rescued.

Officers of the Indian army rescued 172 workers who were stranded after an avalanche struck in northern India's Jammu and Kashmir.

The incident reportedly happened near Sarbal village in Ganderbal district on January 14.


Visuals showed the army officials at work as they helped the stranded workers out of the area. According to a report, these workers of the Megha Engineering and Industry Limited were working on the construction of the Zojila tunnel. After an avalanche struck on January 14, the workers were left stranded as their connection to the main location was snapped.

The Indian army, after being sought for help, jumped to action. Officers of the Assam Rifles (AR) and the avalanche rescue teams with equipment and dogs, were deployed to save the stranded workers. After hours of hard work and effort, the Indian army was able to finally rescue all 172 of the stranded workers.

On January 12, three workers reportedly lost their lives in an avalanche.
