A kind resident held up telephone cables and cleaned the road to help truck drivers pass through.

Street vendor Taweesak Chaopophra had to leave his stall to assist motorists passing through the poorly-planned road in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand.

During sugar milling season, trucks would use the path to transport canes to factories, but they were stalled by wires that hung lower than the vehicles.

Footage shows Taweesak using a 15ft-long bamboo pole to push the cables higher so that the trucks could safely pass through.

Taweesak said: ‘It got worse after the electrical wire was cut and fell on the road so the traffic was jammed in several lanes.

‘I couldn't just stand there and watch so I decided to step in and help.'

Taweesak added that he was worried for drivers, especially motorcycle riders, as they could get into an accident.

He already asked related organisations to prevent and find a solution as he spent his working time helping drivers during rush hour.

Neighbours and drivers thanked him for his volunteer service as he did not seek any return.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
