Matteo Messina Denaro, believed to be the boss of the Cosa Nostra Mafia, has died at 61-years-old.

The 61-year-old was on the run for 30 years before he was detained in Palmero in January 2023.

Footage shows the moment Italian police arrested Denaro.

A woman films the chaos after infamous mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro is brought to the Carabinieri police station located on the road where she lives. She also reacts to the capture. As she takes the video, people start gathering on the streets to witness this historical event.

Messina Denaro, one of the chiefs of Cosa Nostra, had been on the run for 30 years. He was arrested in a private hospital, La Maddalena, where he had been undergoing chemotherapy for a year under a false name.

The mafia boss, who was one of the most wanted men in Europe by Europol, was transferred to a maximum security detention facility.

His arrest constitutes a landmark moment for Italy. Back in 2002, Messina Denaro was tried and sentenced to life in absentia for numerous atrocious crimes. They include the killing of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two famous anti-mafia prosecutors, of Giuseppe Di Matteo, an 11-year-old child, and the terrorist attacks that shook Milan, Florence and Rome in the 1990s.
