Two helicopters were destroyed by a fire that ripped through an airport in Brazil on Wednesday, January 18.

The blaze started in a warehouse at the cargo terminal of the Galeao International Airport in Rio de Janeiro at around 1:40 pm local time.

Fire crews said a third helicopter was in the facility but it was saved.

Police said around 100 military personnel from 17 units were engaged in tackling the blaze, with the support of more than 30 vehicles and helicopters.

The shed housed various materials including wooden pallets and forklifts, in addition to aircraft.

Airport officials said flights were not affected but a thick column of smoke could be seen from surrounding homes.

Police and fire crews are investigating the cause of the fire. Nobody was injured.
