A motorcycle rider had to be winched to safety after crashing and falling into thick mud.

The hefty local was heard shouting for help after coming off his two-wheeler and getting stuck in the sinking mud in Bangkok, Thailand, on January 14.

He was mired in the tar-like earth and could not pull himself up as a motorcycle was weighing down his legs.

Rescuers rushed to the scene and used pulleys and ropes to hoist the two-wheeler from the ditch, keeping the man from sinking any further.

They also cleared away the thick mud before pulling the overweight victim from the ground.

Officers then hauled him onto a stretcher and hosed him down before sending him to the hospital.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools, cheap loans for cars, notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws as well as endemic corruption and chronic under-investment in infrastructure hamper the efforts.
