Vietnamese farmers grow pomelos into yuanbao, gold ingots used as a currency in imperial China, during the Lunar New Year. The word "Tai" is written on them.

In Asian culture, people often buy fruit yuanbao as they are believed to bring good fortune. They are edibles and taste like regular citrus fruit.

The special pomelos cost 10 USD, four times more than the fruit. The farmer said he managed to sell more than 20,000. Customers booked them a few months in advance for Tết, the Lunar New Year.

According to farmers, pomelo is a fruit often used by people to display during the Lunar New Year in Vietnam. To attract customers, farmers have used plastic molds in the shape of gold bars to shape pomelos since they were small. The pomelos, instead of the usual round shape, will be ingots and engraved with the word "Tai" with the meaning of bringing fortune to the family during the Lunar New Year.
The farmer said the shaped pomelos cost 10 USD 4 times more than normal pomelos. And customers have booked a few months in advance to have pomelos on display during Tet.
The farmer said he sold more than 20,000 of these pomelos during the Lunar New Year. Shaped pomelos can still be eaten and taste as sweet as regular grapefruit.
