Protests continue over renaming of Black Boy Lane in London

The renaming of Black Boy Lane has sparked new protests in Tottenham, London. Residents have put up large signs showing the name of the former road.

Haringey Council took action after residents denounced the racial connotations of the street name, and protests led by Black Lives Matter. The road is now called La Rose Lane to remember John La Rose, a publisher, and activist. He founded the first specialist Caribbean publishing company in Britain.

Black Boy Lane was named this way after a historic pub. The council said that the business "depicted a racially caricatured image of a black person until it was replaced as a result of pressure from local residents in the 1980s."

Following George Floyd's death in 2020, many streets and buildings have been renamed in London to protect and respect the different cultural, ethnic, and religious communities.
