One person died and nine others were left injured after a blaze at a high-rise apartment building in Chicago.

Authorities said they are still looking for the cause of the blaze that started on the 15th floor and which affected several floors of the multi-storey building in the city's Kenwood neighbourhood.

Among the injured was one of the city's firefighters, as well as eight others who were identified as civilians. All those injured reportedly did not suffer serious injuries after the flames were spotted mid-morning on the 25-floor residential building.

Chicago Fire Department said around 300 firefighters tackled the blaze and posted about the difficulties of tackling it while it was happening, saying: "With elevators out and long lead to standpipes, crews could not outrun the vertical spread of this high-rise fire."

It took almost two hours to bring the blaze under control.
