Endearing Tawny Frogmouth chicks growing up – new feathers, bickering, peering out of their flimsy nest.

Buy video

A trio of nocturnal Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus strigoides brachypterus) has nested in Flooded Gum trees at Herdsman Lake west of Perth for several years. Tawny Frogmouths are not related to Owls and are closer to Nightjars and depend on their camouflaged plumage for protection. The male Frogmouth sits on the nest by day, protecting his two chicks from the elements and predators. The female Frogmouths care for the chicks in the evening. You can see the white, fluffy chicks in the first part of this video. Twenty-four days later the chicks have grown their grey camouflage plumage and seem much more interested in the world around them – bickering, yawning and peering out of their flimsy nest.
