A massive fire ripped through a floating raft hotel on the River Kwai in Thailand.

The blaze erupted from one of the 16 wooden houses at the Saiyok Mantra Resort in Kanchanaburi province on January 29 afternoon.

Strong wind caused the fire on the huts with nipa roofing to spread rapidly. Firefighters rushed to the scene and hosed down the burning huts.

The flames were extinguished after three hours but had razed 14 of the hotel's rafts.

No tourists or staff were reported harmed. The blaze is said to have caused around 10 million baht (around 306,000 USD) in damage.

Police Captain Kasan Para, deputy inspector at the Sai Yok police station, said: 'We believe a short circuit sparked the fire, but we will investigate further to find its cause.'

Kwanchai Thirasilp, an executive of the Kanchanaburi Rescue Foundation, said the rafts should have water pumps in case of emergencies.
