At least two people have died in a Cambodian nightclub fire just a month after a deadly blaze killed 27 at a nearby casino.

The fire broke out at the Julie and Anna Tokyo club in the Chinese-developed entertainment city of Sihanoukville on January 30 evening.

Authorities said a welding torch that short-circuited had sparked the fire.

Two people, including the welder Phan Makara, died at the hospital, while three others were injured.

Sihanoukville police and the Royal Cambodian Gendarmerie rescued staff and revellers who fainted inside the club 'due to suffocation.'

Officers are conducting investigations into the fire. They have brought in five people for questioning, including owner Hong Seng, who claimed his club had completely burnt down.

The incident comes a month after a massive fire engulfed the Grand Diamond City Hotel in the border town of Poipet between Thailand and Cambodia. An electrical fault is said to have caused the blaze that killed some 27 people and left more than 60 wounded.
