Creative newlyweds handed out bags of onions as wedding souvenirs amid soaring prices of the vegetable.

Footage shows groom and bride Jayson Suplala and Lorellei Savedra packing vegetables during the ceremony's reception in Tagaytay City, the Philippines, on January 24.

The couple gave away a total of 150kg of onions to friends and families who attended their special event, as the shortage surged its price of up to 600 PHP (8.85 GBP) in the country.

They placed the giveaways into hand-crafted, environmental-friendly containers made from weaved dried leaves.

Wedding coordinator Aldrik Gohel said the unique favours were ‘sold out'.

He said: ‘The guests were happy to receive their bags of onions and everything was sold out.

‘The bride Lorellei's family owned an onion-selling business, so the couple thought of sharing the luxurious vegetable with their loved ones.'

Despite being an agricultural country, the Philippines experienced soaring vegetable prices up to 457 per cent higher than the global average.

A kilogram of onions in the country had become more expensive than beef as its price soared five times its normal price compared to previous years.
