This is the moment a Burmese worker disappeared into the sea after being hit by waves while sitting on rocks.

The tourist had gone with friends to go sightseeing at the Lad Koh View Point on Koh Samui in Surat Thani, Thailand on Monday, January 30.

Security guards said the group ignored warnings to stay away from the sea and instead sat on the clumps of rocks dangerously close to the raging waters.

The churning sea continued to batter the coastline, until a particularly large wave swept one of the group away.

Footage shows the man bobbing up and down as he struggled to keep afloat, with his friends chasing after him. However, he was too far from the shore, forcing them to swim back and call for help from Bo Phut police.

Officers scoured the sea but are yet to find the missing Burmese national.

Jirapat Choojun, Koh Samui Deputy District Chief of Security Affairs, warned tourists that the wind was still quite strong, with the waves reaching around two to three metres high.

He said: "We ask tourists to follow warnings and not swim when the red flag is placed on the beach."
