Power lines exploded and burst into flames as a powerful magnitude 6 earthquake hit the Philippines this evening.

The Android Earthquake Alerts System reported that the tremors struck some 89 kilometres from Davao City in the southern island of Mindanao at 6:44 pm local time.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the quake - reportedly between 5.3 and 6.1 in magnitude - struck at a depth of 19 kilometres southeast of Surigao del Norte province at 6:35 pm local time.
