A clumsy wild monitor lizard knocked over a bin while rummaging for food.

Footage shows the 4ft-long reptile reaching inside the trash can at a school in Phitsanulok province, Thailand on January 30.

It was standing on its hind legs and did its best to find something to eat but lost balance.

Shocked students were heard shouting in the background as the hapless creature fell over.

Onlooker Yasumin Inchu said: ‘We were having a lunch break when we saw the lizard. He was really clumsy.'

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
