Piers Corbyn protests London's ULEZ low-emission zone, claims he has £42K in unpaid fines
Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and one of the UK's most well-known conspiracy theorists, campaigned against London's ULEZ low-emission zone on Saturday 4 February.
Accompanied by other protesters standing beside a car parked illegally on the roundabout beside Trafalgar Square, he called on Londoners not to abide by ULEZ restrictions and to ignore any fines they incurred.
He said that if enough people do that it will "break ULEZ". He also claimed that there would be a court case that would result in the system being stopped and fines being returned to those who have paid them.
He claimed to have accumulated around 42,000 pounds (50,000 US dollars) in fines and related penalties himself.
Older models of cars and other vehicles are banned from the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) unless they pay a daily charge of 12.50 pounds (15 dollars).
The area covered by the ULEZ is due to be expanded in the summer, to cover most of London's roads.
The zone and its expansion is unpopular with some business owners, car owners and right-wingers. Climate change deniers such as Mr Corbyn also oppose it.
Low-income Londoners are being offered deals to scrap their old polluting cars ahead of the ULEZ expansion.
