A magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria in the early hours of February 6. The combined death toll now exceeds 1,200.

This footage shows the extent of the damage in Malatya, Eastern Anatolia, Elbistan, Kahramanmaraş Province, Turkey.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, near the border with Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that around 9,000 people have been deployed in the search and rescue efforts.
