A natural forest is seen in Yichang, Hubei province, China, February 5, 2023. China's natural forest protection and restoration project has made significant progress since it was piloted in 1998, the State Forestry and Grass Administration announced on Feb 3. The project was launched on a pilot basis in 1998. Compared with before the project started, the area of natural forests has increased by 323 million mu and the volume of natural forests has increased by 5.3 billion cubic meters. The annual water conservation and sand fixation of natural forest per unit area were 53% and 46% higher than before the project started. In 2012, China launched the National Reserve Forest construction project. By 2022, more than 140 billion yuan had been allocated for construction over the past ten years, and more than 92 million mu of national reserve forest had been built. In the past ten years, the total stock volume of the construction areas of the National Reserve forest project has increased by 270 million cubic meters, with an average annual stock volume of about 10.8 cubic meters per hectare, and about 150 million cubic meters of timber have been produced through the national reserve forest. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China will build more than 36 million mu of national reserve forest and increase its stock by more than 70 million cubic meters.
