Mae Salong, also known as Santikhiri (Hill of Peace) is a major producer of teas, especially oolong. The area was originally settled by Chinese refugees of the Kuomintang army following the establishment of the People's Republic of China.

Bordering Burma (Myanmar), the villagers were involved with the infamous drug lord Khun Sa, who lived nearby, in the opium trade until Thailand persuaded them to move into farming, notably teas and fruit.

The mountainous villages are more Chinese in character than Thai, offering visitors a unique perspective.
