A crazed online gaming addict shot his own uncle multiple times in a dispute "over a virtual license plate in a video game."

Cherdchomporn Panthaprom, 43, shot Siriwut Buraso, 59, as his relative was drinking coffee in his house in Udon Thani province, Thailand, on January 30.

The suspect parked his pickup truck in front of Siriwut's house, aimed his gun through the fence gaps, and opened fire before fleeing back to his home.

The bullets hit Siriwut's ribs and leg, but he survived the attack as he was rushed to the hospital in time.

Ku Kaeo district police and local officials soon converged on Cherdchomporn's house to detain him. They also brought along his family to persuade him to turn himself in.

Negotiations lasted for two hours, but the alleged gunman still refused to come out.

Finally, Cherdchomporn's brother Vichai, 60, entered the house by himself, confident he would emerge unharmed. He returned outside with his sibling in tow, and handed him over to the police.

Vichai said: " was afraid my brother would only get hurt if I did not try to persuade him. I knew how he would act so I went inside and took the gun from his hand before letting the police arrest him."

Vichai added that Cherdchomporn had been a former meth user who has been rehabilitated several years ago. However, after recovering he immersed himself in mobile games and refused to work, opting to play all day long instead.

He liked to play military-themed games, and went on a rampage claiming the victim had tried to "steal his commander's car license plate."

A week before the shooting, he had been seen shooting at rats in a field, Vichai said.

"He is addicted to gaming and it makes him aggressive, he plays them all the time," the brother said.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Nantaphon Khunlakon said Cherdchomporn underwent a drug test, but no narcotics were found in his urine.

The policeman added: "He has confessed to the attack. He will be charged with attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition."
