Hokkien people celebrated the grant event “Bai Tian Going” on the ninth day of the Lunar New Year in southeast China.

Video filmed in Fujian’s Zhangzhou on Jan 30 shows the villagers praying to the Jade Emperor.

“Bai” Means pray, and “Tian Gong” means the Jade Emperor.

According to the filmer, Lin Zhi, “Bai Tian Gong” happens on the ninth day of the first month of the Lunar New Year, which is also the Jade Emperor’s birthday.

On this day, the villagers gathered together to thank the blessing of the Jade Emperor and prayed for good luck, with tribute including fruits, tea and birthday noodles.

The event usually starts from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and most participants are females, said Lin.

The ancient Hokkiens believed that the Jade Emperor protected them from the massacre. To memorize his blessing, they set “Bai Tian Gong” to show their gratitude.
