Gunman in stand-off with police after shooting two people on bus in Thailand
A gunman was in a stand-off with police this morning after allegedly shooting two people on a bus in Thailand.
The suspect, estimated to be around 30 years old, reportedly targeted passengers on the Phuket-Phatthalung bus while it was on Thep Krasattri Road in Phuket at around 6.50 AM local time.
He was understood to be on the bus alone without any hostages as of 11:15 AM local time with armed officers surrounding the vehicle.
Police said around 10 people were able to escape after the driver Somyot Buakaew parked the bus. CCTV showed them fleeing in panic.
However, one man and a woman were injured and were taken to the hospital for gunshot wounds.
The police temporarily closed the area and were negotiating with the man to surrender peacefully.
The incident took place just a short distance from the Phuket bus station, only a mile from the station. The driver said that the bus left with nine passengers from the station at 6.40 AM.
Some five to 10 minutes after departing, the bus stopped at the traffic light before a gun noise rang out. A woman ran to the front of the bus and told him that she was shot.
Colonel Suchart Mheelampong from Phuket Police said the two passengers had suffered gunshot wounds and were being treated in hospital.
