Tree-climbers earn handsome wage securing durians to branches as storms hit Thailand
Workers are earning handsome wages by tying durians to branches as storms hit Thailand.
The once-a-year job offers good money for the locals, with tree climbers making around 2,000 THB (around 59 USD) a day securing the precious fruit to trees.
They earn around five baht per durian, with rates nearly doubling to nine baht per fruit the taller the trees are.
Ponthep Seekhem, 32, from Chanthaburi province shared that he earns at least 2,000 baht a day by tying more than 400 durians.
Footage shows diligent workers weaving webs of red rope across the durian trees to prevent their fruit from being blown away.
Pornthep said: 'I earn not less than 2,000 baht per day, but I must rush to do it all day.
'A lot of farmers have booked my services to protect their durians from the wind.'
He added that gales and high trees add to the difficulty of his work.
Despite the physically demanding job that requires plenty of stamina, Ponthep and others like him are enjoying busy days as they are in high demand across Chanthaburi and Trat provinces.
Ponthep said: 'Farmers are concerned about the impact of cold weather and strong winds on their fruits.
'They use bamboo trees as windbreakers, but they feel safer if we tie the durians to the branches.'
